Mayor Bloomberg joined Govenor Andrew Cuomo, Police Commisioner Raymond Kelly, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Lautenberg, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and others in the parade marking Israel's 63rd year of independence. Notable in his absence was embattled Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of Brooklyn and Queens who is usually a fixture at the parade but has plenty of photos of him at other events.

There were several Grand Marshalls including real estate developer and founder of Thor Equities, Joseph Sit, Israel’s consul general in New York, Ido Aharoni, and Israel’s minister of information and diaspora, Yuli Edelstein.

At 59th and  Fifth Avenue the sidewalk on the west side of the street was filled with two groups of protesters who have appeared each year: anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox Jews who oppose Israel’s existence and supporters of a Palestinian state who hoisted their red, black, white, and green flags. The ultra-Orthodox Jews also waved Palestinian flags as marchers harangued the protesters and the NYPD worked hard to keep everything under control.
